When it comes to talking about dentures and how they can help people, there’s multiple things. Obviously, the most obvious one you would think would be function, someone being able to chew their food, someone being able to eat properly. But the other thing that’s extremely important when it comes to dentures is facial appearance.
Someone that is missing all of their teeth or someone that has dentures that they’ve had for decades, and we see that all the time, what happens is over time when someone just has dentures and they don’t have teeth, in their jawbone, the jaw gets smaller and smaller and smaller. And so someone’s dentures, when they close down, when they get their dentures, are right here. Over time, with bone resorption and the teeth wearing down, it gets closer and closer and closer.
When that happens, that’s when you see someone whose mouth has gotten much smaller and their face has collapsed and they don’t have lip support. It’s because the internal changes of the jawbone and also the dentures getting worn down over time. So just by simply making a new set of dentures, we can greatly enhance the appearance of the face, and we can also improve on the chewing ability and the function.
And where things really get exciting and really beneficial for patients is restoring someone’s mouth with dentures and utilizing dental implants to anchor those dentures in place. We’re able to provide even better function than we are with dentures alone.
